Episode Guide Season 2 The second season of Charmed is again characterized by the series writers' mantra: "Charmed is a show about three sisters who just happen to be powerful witches, not three witches who happen to be sisters". This formula enabled the Executive Producers' stable of writers to gradually build on the sisters' magic, while spending the show's main entertainment minutes dealing with the human dilemma of the complications and vicissitudes that busy lives lay on anyone. Like the first season, the sisters fight different forces of evil each episode, and the show continues to focus on how such things impact the sisters' attempt to live normal lives, as far as such is possible. Daryl Morris, Andy's police partner before his death, becomes a more prominent character as he begins to learn about the sisters' secret lives and helps them out in certain situations. The season also introduces two characters; neighbours Dan Gordon and his niece Jenny. Piper, becoming frustrated with the limitations of her relationship with whitelighter Leo Wyatt is drawn to Dan creating a love triangle which lasts the majority of the season. She also opens a nightclub 'P3' which takes over from Quake as a place for the sisters to meet when not at the Manor. It also allowed the show to introduce musical guests either in the opening or ending of each episode. Phoebe decides to return to school to complete a degree in Psychology and Prue leaves her job mid-season to follow her dream of becoming a photographer. She also has a brief relationship with Jack Sheridan whom she meets at Bucklands before leaving. This season also sees the sisters' powers growing as they begin to gain more control over their powers, such as Phoebe being able to command premonitions, Piper selectively freezing objects and Prue gaining the power of astral projection. They also begin to learn how to write and cast their own spells and to create their own vanquishing potions. Okay, so I just rewatched "Pardon My Past." Pretty good episode. I really like how when Phoebe first cast the spell to go back it was in black and white and from a first person perspective. I also quite like how this episode kind of foreshadows Phoebe's relationship with Cole and how she was turned evil because of it. There are a few questions I have, though. Phoebe cast a spell to transfer her life force to the past and P. Russel's life force to the present. But... aren't they the same life force? P. Russel is Phoebe's past life, and it lives within Phoebe. So... how could it switch? Another question... I wonder if Phoebe wrote in the Book not only a warning about Anton, but a warning about the curse. The curse was for ALL future lives. Phoebe only protected her own with the amulet, so won't that mean that each future life will have to wear the amulet on that day? I hope they don't misplace it.

There's alot I don't get about the whole past lives in Charmed because they butcher the mythology with every episode dealing with life-force. But uhm, let's try and make sense of nonsense...
Okay, bodies are vessels that harbor souls. Souls are recycled, that is, they are renewed, cleansed. Throughout this, time moves. So we have two vessels now, in different times, yet one soul, that has changed over time. But this soul still exists in two states, in two seperate times. So all Phoebe does is shifts these two states through time.

That does make more sense. Shifting of the different states between vessels. Well said, Brandon. Thanks. All in all, I think this episode ranks around the middle of this season for me. It was fun, in a way did some nice foreshadowing, and the scenes in the past were pretty well done. Plus it has allowed for several other fun stories based on past lives to be written. But even so, it isn't one of my favorites and I think people overrate it a little. ... Although, having said that, it may actually be in my top ten for this season. Not many episodes from S2 stand out for me and the season as a whole certainly doesn't rank high on my list. It may be... third to last on my list of favorite seasons. There were a lot of good moments, sure, but there aren't a lot of episodes that I want to rewatch very much. How does everyone else feel about this season?

Season 2 is on my top 3 of favorite seasons. I know many people dislike this season but I really do enjoy all episodes.
I think that when Phoebe wrote about Anton, that she also wrote about the curse. Brandon gave a really good explanation of the soul swapping. I never looked at it that way.
Anyway. My favorite episodes would be Witch Trial, The Painted World, The Devil's Music, Chick Flick, etc... I have many season 2 favorites. I think they had a good balance between the family storylines and the magical ones. It's also the season where the Book of Shadows has my most favorite look.
I also found this was Phoebe's best season. She was still the fun, young sister that I liked. She changed to much for me after the whole Cole thing.
